For some of us, finding our perfect skincare routine is a scary prospect. Trying new products can create dryness, irritation and rashes. It can seem safer to stick with what we know, even if we’re not achieving the natural glow we’re looking for.
I used to be like that until I started developing my own skincare line and learned a lot about how to look after sensitive skin. The products you use absolutely matter. That being said, skincare is more than just skin deep! There are other factors that affect our skin and by taking a holistic approach, we can achieve the results we want without flare-ups.
Here are the top 5 skincare practices that lead to a natural glow which are sensitive skin approved!
5 top tips for soothing and brightening sensitive skin
This is the holistic approach I follow to keep my skin looking and feeling amazing.
Carefully curate your skincare products
I always stick to using natural products on my skin, especially my face. Synthetic ingredients are much more likely to cause irritation. Using products that have a few simple ingredients is going to be much kinder to your skin.
However, you can still get a reaction from an all-natural product. It depends on what ingredients trigger the irritation. For example, I’m allergic to oranges. Oranges have ascorbic acid in them. Ascorbic acid is also used in some skincare products. Those products don’t sit well with my skin! To be on the safe side, I patch test any new products I want to try, even if they are completely natural.
Our natural skincare range includes simple but powerful ingredients such as creamy butters and essential oils.
Understand how what you eat affects your skin
Talking of allergies, it’s helpful to know how what you eat affects your skin. Certain foods might not present a typical allergic reaction but they could affect your bodily systems in a way that makes your skin more dull, dry or sensitive. Our skin is the biggest organ in our bodies so it’s going to reflect our health and wellbeing. Keep a food diary and see what you notice when you eat different types of food.
Manage stress
I’m a big advocate for stress management. My own burnout and following recovery is what inspired Esker Fields. Creating natural skincare with essential oils is a way to support the body and the mind as essential oils work on both. I have definitely seen my stress levels reflected in the look and feel of my skin. Its impact on our physical body can’t be underestimated as constantly being in fight or flight mode disrupts important bodily processes that keep us balanced.
If in doubt, I turn to my Relax Rollerball to help me release tension and find grounding.
Get proper sleep and fresh air
Both your skin condition and stress levels will be positively impacted by a good night’s sleep and fresh air. Yes, going on a daily walk can help your skin too. There were about 6 weeks when I wasn’t doing my walks as usual. As soon as I started walking regularly again, I noticed that my skin was much brighter. When you give your body what it needs to regulate and rebalance, the glow comes from within. The same goes for sleep. Your body needs the time to rest, restore and keep all your systems moving smoothly.

Stay hydrated
The final thing I want to mention when it comes to a holistic approach to skincare is drinking water. It’s one of those things that’s said to help with all kinds of areas of health. I have to say, it does work! I notice the difference in my skin (as well as other areas) when I stay hydrated. Over the winter, I wasn’t drinking as much and staying inside with the central heating didn’t help either. When I noticed it, I became more intentional about staying hydrated and my skin thanked me for it.
