I used to be scared to try new skincare products on my own skin. As a founder of a skincare company who has formulated her own products, that may surprise you but it’s why I’m so passionate about the skincare I’ve developed through Esker Fields.
When I used to try new skincare products, I was risking irritating my skin. Most of the time, I didn’t want to deal with the aftermath of a product not sitting well on my skin – redness, rashes and sensitivity. I would stick to what I knew even if it wasn’t getting me the results I wanted.
After training as an aromatherapist, I realised how much essential oils could do for the skin. They were incredible at healing and rejuvenating. So I learned everything I could about using them for skincare and that’s when I found out what was really put into most skincare products.
The issue wasn’t my sensitive skin. The issue was that some of the ingredients used in skincare aren’t good for the skin.
Preservatives and unnatural fragrances do more harm than good for a lot of people, myself included. But you don’t need them in your skincare to get the results you want. All-natural ingredients are just as, if not more, effective at creating the natural glow we’re all looking for. And so Esker Fields skincare came into being, following the values of the clean beauty movement before it became popular.
What is clean beauty?
Clean beauty is a trend in makeup, skincare and other cosmetic products that focuses on the ingredients in the products themselves. It stands against synthetic ingredients that are potentially harmful to the skin, health and environment and stands for natural ingredients that nourish the skin, support wellbeing and are sustainable.
Esker Fields is an example of clean beauty because all our skincare products are made from pure essential oils, carrier oils and butters. We also use recyclable packaging and organic ingredients where possible. Each bottle or pot of aromatherapy skincare is handmade with love in small batches on my family farm in Ireland.
Why does clean beauty matter?
I first started following the principles of clean beauty (before I even became familiar with the term) because clean beauty products are better for my sensitive skin. I have never had issues with Esker Fields skincare causing irritation. Always check the ingredients to make sure there is nothing in the formulation that you are allergic to. Just a note to say, if you have had a reaction to essential oils before, it might be because you have used them in too high dilutions. That’s why it’s so important to blend essential oils with carrier oils before applying to the skin. If you’re worried about a particular essential oil or ingredient, do a patch test first.
The more I learned about natural ingredient skincare, the more reasons I found to champion it. If we can get the skincare results we’re looking for without potentially damaging our skin, health or the environment through synthetic, chemical or other harmful ingredients, why wouldn’t we? We are all becoming more conscious of the items we use daily, from cleaning products to food. The clean beauty movement leads to more transparency around ingredients and more informed decisions which can only be a good thing.
How to find clean beauty products
It’s not always obvious. As clean beauty is a popular trend, there could be brands that are greenwashing. There could also be brands that don’t outwardly speak about clean beauty but still only rely on a few simple, natural and powerful ingredients.
The best place to start is by reading the ingredients list of the product you’re interested in. Become familiar with what you are using on your skin. The challenge then is understanding the ingredients and the potential impact they could have. You might not have time to Google every ingredient in the shop!
That’s where tools like the Yuka app can come in handy. All you need to do is scan the barcode and the app rates the ingredient safety. It will give the product an overall score and highlight any potentially harmful ingredients so you can make an informed decision about what you are buying and using on your skin.
What does Esker Fields score on Yuka?

You don’t have to take my word for it when I say that Esker Fields is clean beauty, as we use all-natural, non-harmful ingredients. Here are the ratings of a few of our products.
