How to Bring the Feeling of an At-Home Spa Day into Everyday Life

You know the feeling you get when you’ve had a spa treatment? The floaty relaxation. The inner peace and calm. The rejuvenation, like your energy levels have been topped up.

What if you could experience that more? I know that most of us can’t go to the spa every day. Even at-home alternatives are hard to fit in when at the beginning of the day you’re racing to do the school run and by the end of the day you’re worn out.

What’s worked a lot better for me is using small pockets of time to create the at-home spa day feeling. Instead of waiting until I have time (I never do!) I take a couple of minutes here and there every day to usher in relaxation, peace and calm.

Here’s how I manage it while juggling running a business and family life.

The power of habit stacking

In your daily life, you have non-negotiables in your routine. These are things that have to happen come rain or shine. They are so habitual that you hardly even think about doing them. It’s second nature.

For example, brushing your teeth in the morning, boiling the kettle for a cup of tea and going to pick up the kids from school.

As these are already part of your established routine, they are great anchor points for self-care rituals. Something I’ve started doing is thinking about what I will be grateful for by the end of the day when I’m getting ready in the morning. You could do a quick breathwork exercise while you’re waiting for the kettle to boil. Or how about a bit of meditation when you’re waiting to pick up the kids?

They only require a quick pause and add a minute or two to your usual routine. For the level of relaxation and stress relief they bring, it’s well worth it. Think about the non-negotiable parts of your routine that could work as building blocks for your habit stacks.

Relaxation techniques to add to your habit stack

Now you’ve got an idea of routine activities you can match with a self-care ritual, let’s think about the simple things you can do to bring more calm into your life.

  • Skincare – I find applying skincare a wonderfully mindful activity. If you are intentional about applying it, you can take your mind away from the worries of the day and be in the moment. I enhance the sensory experience by using essential oil infused skincare. As I apply it, I’m surrounded by lovely soothing aromas that bring me to a calm and peaceful state. If you’re going to apply skincare anyway, you might as well turn it into a relaxing part of your routine.
  • Gratitudes – As I mentioned before, gratitudes are one of my self-care rituals. When I’m doing my skincare in the morning and anchored to the aromas, I think about all the things I’m going to be grateful for that day, big or small. Then in the evening, I do the same, focusing my mind on all the positive things I experienced that day. It’s like retraining your brain to think about the positive, not only cling to the stress.
  • Meditation – This is a well-known way to clear your mind of worried thoughts. You can do it anywhere, while walking to work, in a quiet corner on your lunch break or in the bath if that’s the only quiet moment you have! I recommend using an aromatherapy product at the same time. A simple application of a rollerball will prompt your body to relax and your mind to clear, making practising meditation easier.
  • Aromatherapy shower – Whether you are a morning or evening shower person, this is your time to look after yourself. Enhance that with essential oil bath products. Depending on the oil blend, they can wake you up in the morning or calm you down at night. Wash away the worries and use this time to find your centre.
  • Soothing scents – Another way you can experience aromatherapy is by adding a couple of drops of essential oils to a diffuser. It creates an amazingly relaxing atmosphere. Whenever I sit down at my desk to do some work, I light my diffuser as an act of self-care and to create an atmosphere where I feel calm and centred enough to do my best work.

These are just a few ideas to get you started. Think about the self-care rituals that best support you and how you can integrate them into your existing routine to ensure you do them consistently, even just for 2 minutes a day.
